What is IPL treatment?
IPL, or intense pulsed light, hair removal is a method of removing unwanted hair through the use of light pulses that destroy hair follicles and inhibit new hair growth. The light pulses cover a large area at one time and travel safely through the skin to target the hair follicles. IPL hair removal is most effective when your hair is growing, so multiple treatments reach the most hair follicles at different stages of growth.
In addition to hair removal, IPL therapy is an effective treatment for minimizing the appearance of spider veins, skin discoloration, and sun damage. IPL is commonly used for wrinkle reduction and reducing age spots and acne scars on the face, neck, chest, and back of your hands — just about anywhere you want to improve skin tone.
Is IPL hair removal safe for every hair color?
The IPL treatment works safely on lighter and brown or dark hair types for hair removal on just about every part of your body. Typically the amount of sessions vary from 6 to 8 treatments with the IPL device, the hair follicle is disrupted enough for the hair to permanently stop growing.* The skin around the follicle remains undamaged by the light, and IPL is a virtually pain-free treatment option.
How should I prepare for IPL hair removal treatment?
One of the Skin professionals at the clinic office goes over everything in detail with you before your first treatment, but you’re generally advised to stop other types of hair removal, including waxing or tweezing, several weeks before your first appointment. Because IPL hair removal is most effective on growing hair, allow it to grow before your visit. Avoid excessive sun exposure, too, so your skin isn’t burned or irritated when you come in.

- Certain medical conditions: Individuals with a history of seizures or those with autoimmune diseases like Lupus should consult with their doctor before considering IPL.
- Photosensitizing medications: Certain medications can make the skin more sensitive to light. It’s crucial to discuss all medications with a healthcare professional before IPL.
- Recent sunburn: Recent sunburn can make the skin more vulnerable to damage from IPL.
Skin Conditions:
- Eczema and psoriasis: IPL may not be suitable for individuals with active eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area.
- Dark skin: IPL can be risky for individuals with very dark skin due to the potential for skin pigmentation changes.
- Open wounds or lesions: Avoid IPL on areas with open wounds, cuts, or lesions.
Other Considerations:
- Recent hair removal methods:
Waxing, tweezing, or threading can interfere with IPL effectiveness, as the light needs to target the hair follicle.
- Recent sun exposure:
Avoid tanning or sun exposure to the treatment area for several weeks before IPL.
- Roaccutane (isotretinoin):
Individuals who have used Roaccutane should wait at least six months after stopping the medication before considering IPL.
- Tattoos:
IPL is not recommended on tattoos.
Pre-Treatment Care:
- Sun Protection:
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks before your IPL treatment. Sunburnt or tanned skin can be more sensitive and prone to complications.
- Hair Removal:
Do not wax, pluck, or thread the hair in the treatment area for at least six weeks before your session. Shaving is the only acceptable hair removal method before treatment.
- Skin Preparation:
Ensure the treatment area is clean-shaven on the day of your appointment.
- Avoid Irritants:
Refrain from using any lotions, creams, or makeup on the treatment area before your session. Discontinue the use of products containing retinol or other strong exfoliants for a few days prior.
- Medications:
Inform your practitioner about any medications you are taking, as some can affect the skin’s sensitivity to light.
Post-Treatment Care:
- Sun Protection:
Protect the treated area from sun exposure for at least two weeks following treatment. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
- Avoid Heat:
Avoid hot showers, baths, saunas, and strenuous exercise for at least 24-48 hours after treatment. These can increase heat retention and potentially cause irritation.
- Gentle Cleansing:
Cleanse the treated area gently with a mild cleanser. Avoid harsh scrubbing or exfoliation for a few days.
- Moisturize:
Keep the skin moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion, such as an aloe-based product.
- Avoid Irritants:
Refrain from using any products that contain retinol, glycolic acid, or other potential irritants for a few days.
- Comfort:
If you experience any discomfort, you can apply a cool compress or aloe vera gel to soothe the area.
- Monitor:
Watch for any signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, or pus, and contact your practitioner if you have any concerns.
- Don’t Pick:
Avoid picking or scratching the treated area.
